Retired Navy Center Turned Food and Arts Wonderland

Liberty Station is one of the coolest spots you can find with a unique history as well. Located in San Diego, California Liberty Station was actually a Navy Training center which opened in the early 1920’s. The Navy used this training center through the Cold War then used it less and less until ultimately closing it in 1997. A few years later the city of San Diego took over and repurposed it for what it is use for today; A lively space filled with food, shopping, and history.

There is such a huge diverse selection of businesses that fill this land. Countless food options, art, shopping, health and wellness, and even lodging options. During my visit I spent most of my time at the Liberty Public Market. It is open 7 days a week and has something for everyone.

While there my friend and I had a few cocktails along with some BBQ and bao’s. There is a happy hour M-F 3-6PM and though they mostly open at 11, some vendors open early and serve breakfast. I’d encourage you to check out the website to see all of the current vendors both food and small merchants. There is fantastic outdoor seating area making it the perfect place to grab a quick bite or chill with friends.

Their mission statement is: “Liberty Public Market’s goal is to be the central market place of the region where locals and visitors alike, can immerse themselves into the work of the best artisans around.” and I believe they totally live up to that.

A bonus for aviation geeks like myself is that Liberty Station is located right in the flight path of the San Diego airport meaning plans take off right over your heads. It is incredibly cool to be so close and gives great views. All in all this is a must visit for any trip to San Diego.
